Day Trips from Benalmadena: Malaga, Mijas and the Costa del Sol Axis

Benalmadena sits at a useful midpoint on the Costa del Sol commuter rail line, which makes it a practical base for day trips without a car. Malaga is 30 minutes east on the Cercanias C1 line, with trains every 20 minutes — step off at Malaga Centro-Alameda and you are a ten-minute walk from the Picasso Museum, the Pompidou Centre, the Cathedral, and the Atarazanas market. Fuengirola is 15 minutes west on the same line, connecting to Mijas Pueblo by a bus that runs every 30 minutes from Fuengirola bus station and climbs to the white village in 25 minutes. Mijas Pueblo offers craft shops, viewpoints over the coast, and a smaller, calmer alternative to Benalmadena Pueblo. For Marbella and the western Costa del Sol, the train does not reach — you need a bus from Fuengirola or a car along the AP-7. Ronda, the dramatic gorge town in the interior, is 90 minutes by car via the A-397 mountain road, which includes hairpin turns above the Guadiaro river valley — not recommended for anxious drivers. A Malaga day fills naturally: morning at the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, lunch in the Soho neighbourhood, afternoon at the Pompidou or Cathedral, and the Cercanias back by early evening. Return trains run until approximately 23:00.
